Prepare Your Kitchen Exhaust for a Fire Inspection

Fire and life-safety inspections move fast. When the reviewer reaches the kitchen, they often look up—into the hood—and ask for cleaning records. Preparing your exhaust system ahead of time reduces stress and findings.

What inspectors commonly check

• Visible grease on hood interiors, filters, and grease cups
• Whether ducts and fans appear maintained—not only the hood face
• Access panels present and usable for cleaning
• Fan condition and rooftop grease containment
• Recent professional cleaning certificates or reports

Two weeks out: paperwork and walkthrough

Locate your last service report and certificate. If dates are old or files are missing, schedule professional cleaning before the inspection—not the morning of. Walk the hood line yourself: lift filters, look into the plenum if safe, and note any dripping grease.

One week out: fix what you can

• Replace damaged filters
• Clear storage that blocks hood access
• Confirm rooftop access for your contractor or inspector
• Ask facilities to address known missing clean-out panels

Day before: kitchen ready

Leave certificates in a known folder. Ensure filters are installed correctly. Do not attempt a last-minute DIY “shine” that hides grease deeper in the system—inspectors know the difference.
